How to reduce forklift fuel costs
IS YOUR business trying to decrease its forklift’s fuel consumption?
There are a few small tips you can do to make your forklift consume less fuel and save you quite an amount of money in the long run.
Maintain a consistent speed
Make an effort to avoid sudden changes in speed by always driving smoothly and accelerating gently.
Maintaining a steady pace not only saves fuel, but is likely to reduce maintenance costs as well because it avoids straining the engine.
Release the accelerator in good time whenever you have to stop or slow down, you will save plenty of revs without vastly reducing your overall speed.
Switch the engine off whenever possible
If the job you are working on is interrupted for longer than one minute (e.g. if you have to wait for a load to be prepared), turn the engine off.
Also, don’t start the engine until you’re ready to start working.
This avoids fuel wastage and ensures that the engine warms up as quickly as possible.
Keep track of fuel consumption
Log meter readings at the start and end of each shift, so that significant changes in fuel consumption are immediately noticed.
Co-workers using the same forklift should all be able to contribute to the log, so keep it in the operator manual compartment for easy access.
Use better forklift traffic routes
The layout of the yard greatly affects forklift traffic routes and thus fuel consumption. Be open to discuss route changes that may decrease forklift travel with your supervisors.
